Libby swallowed hard. She also blinked away tears. For a few days, she’d forgotten how hard these headlines had smacked her down. She’d believed in her ability to make a change, to help.

It was a harsh reality she’d glossed over in an attempt to be who her aunt wanted. Libby wanted to cry, but she wouldn’t do that in front of this toady for Stirling Development.

“This is old news, Clyde. I was cleared. My ex-husband is the bad actor here. My record is clean.”

“Well, funny, isn’t it? None of that really made the front page, did it?”

The man was right. And it was why she was here, not back in Chicago, moving and shaking and rebuilding her life. The fact that she wasn’t indicted didn’t get the big splash in the papers or on the news. Everyone in the state of Illinois attached the name of Libby Quinn Malcolm to a financial scandal.

While the locals didn’t seem to hold it against her, she had come here with her tail between her legs. Stone Stirling knew it. It wasn’t hard to find dirt on Libby, and the minute she stood in opposition to Stirling Development’s plans, Stone Stirling got his shovel and started digging.

Libby stood up. She didn’t want to break down in this office. She didn’t want this stranger to have the satisfaction of seeing her lose it.

“Thank you for your time.” That was all she could muster. Libby turned and walked out. Behind her, she could hear Clyde Brubaker laughing. He was actually laughing!
